I'm in a PhD program, so I applied through their formal application process, but there were many kind souls along the way who gave me the feedback I needed. I emailed my advisor beforehand to ask her if she'd be interested in working with me. I also asked at least 5 professors and 2 PhD students to look over my personal statement, and 2 native-Spanish-speaker friends helped look over my writing sample (in Spanish).
I found a my role through a referral from my network (friend, family member, colleague)
I started out as a Contractor. While a contractor I set up lunch meetings and coffee chats on my own time with employees to grow my network. When my contract was up one of them offered to refer me to the company in a different role and I was hired full time.
For my last three roles it's been:I found a my role through a referral from my network (friend, family member, colleague)And it's made a huge difference because I've always had extra insights into the company and team, its culture and its struggles. Far more intel than you get from a job description!
Self Employed. However, my last 2 corporate roles came about because I reached out to the senior leadership at a company because they had roles that kind of matched what I wanted to do. So I emailed them who I was, what I had to offer and where I'd like to go and got my first interviews with leaders who were hiring and could utilize the skill sets and experience I had to offer.
