Interviewing is a 2 ways street and recruiters are a great resource to learn more insights to help your journey to What's Next! During the weekly Peppercorn Coaching sessions, we talk about how understanding more about yourself helps you ask the right questions when interviewing.
Adam Broda has some great questions you should ask when speaking to a recruiter at a company. Our Chief Coach - urvi, has put some of her own insights into each question! (see comments in blue). All links go to the free Discovery Platform that you can sign up for here.
10 questions you should ask your recruiter once you get tapped for an interview:
1. What does the recruiting process at this company look like from start to finish? How many interviews can I expect, and what interview types should I be prepared for (phone screen, virtual, etc.)? urvi - it's important to get important details in writing whenever possible. If the recruiter provides information verbally, follow up with an email to confirm what was discussed. 2. Will I be expected to produce any writing samples or other non-interview tasks? urvi - Recruiters may ask for writing samples or non-interview tasks to assess your skills. If it's a new project, you're essentially doing consulting work and should be compensated if not hired. For creative or design jobs, producing original work is expected. 3. What kind of interview questions should I be prepared to answer? Is there a recommended format for my responses (ex: STAR)? urvi - At Peppercorn.ai Discovery we use the CAR Format*. (You can check out The Rule of 3 to learn more). CAR = Context/Challenge | Action | Result. The Discovery platform* gives all the formulas and words to use to create your CAR with your own stories. 4. How long will the interviews last, and how many people will I be interviewing at one time? 5. What, if anything, should I be prepared to bring with me for the on-site interviews, and what dress code do you recommend? 6. What are your recommendations for effective interview prep for this team? 7. Is it appropriate to bring in examples (or a portfolio) of past work? Have other candidates done this successfully? Do you recommend it? 8. Can you describe the “culture” of the team I’d be hiring into? What kind of work-life balance do they have? urvi - it's very important to have done your homework on understanding what kind of Culture is important to you in the work you do before you interview. You can check out Culture* in the Peppercorn.ai Discovery platform* to get a sense of how to do this exercise. 9. What recommendations do you have for researching the salary range at this company? I want to ensure my numbers are accurate. urvi - there are many sites you can use for this and at Peppercorn.ai Discovery Platform* we have a full lesson on understanding compensation* and why it's important, along with the site we recommend. 10. Can you accommodate my disability or special need?
Recruiters are your advocates in almost every situation throughout the hiring and interviewing process. Take advantage of what they know! Make every interaction work for you.
Some additional questions from the Peppercorn team:
11. Can you give me some insights into the personality and expectations of the individuals I will be interviewing with at the company?
12. What would make the top candidate successful in this role?
13. Get a little deeper on the culture question by already knowing what kind of environment works for you and ask questions to see if the culture/environment matches what you want in your Ideal Position*.
What other questions would you add to this list - list them in the comments.
