Supporting job seekers on their path to finding the right organization has been a fulfilling and impactful part of my role as a career coach. One of my clients, Maria, a talented and ambitious professional, sought guidance on the questions she should ask during the interview process to ensure a perfect fit with the organization's values and culture.
Maria's experience sheds light on a typical difficulty that job seekers face: figuring out whether an organization aligns with their particular needs and aspirations. Traditional job search methods often fail to address this critical aspect, leading to potential misalignment and dissatisfaction in the workplace.
Conventional job search methods primarily focus on surface-level factors such as qualifications, salary, and job responsibilities. While these elements are essential, they may not provide a comprehensive understanding of an organization's commitment to diversity, inclusion, and supportive growth environments. Maria needs to explore deeper aspects to ensure she finds an organization that values and supports her unique perspectives.
To overcome the limitations of traditional job search methods, you can leverage the Discovery Process, specifically Module 200: Ideal Position*. This module empowers individuals to develop their ideal job description based on various attributes, taking into account factors that are particularly important to them.
Here are some other direct questions you can ask during the interview process to determine if an organization is the right fit:
What is the company's mission and values, and how do they align with my own?
Can you describe the company culture and working environment?
How does the organization support professional development and growth?
What are the opportunities for advancement within the company?
How does the company foster work-life balance?
What is the leadership style within the organization?
How does the company handle feedback and employee well-being?
Can you share examples of the organization's commitment to diversity and inclusion?
How does the company encourage collaboration and teamwork?
What is the communication structure within the organization?
Before you ask these questions, you must be able to define the answers that align with you. You can find your own answers by working through the first two modules of Discovery Platform: Self-Awareness* and Ideal Position*. This will provide clarity and confidence as you ask these questions in your interview.
When embarking on a job search journey, you must be intentional about finding an organization that embraces and values your unique perspectives.

At my former organization the wonderful values were NOT in alignment with the senior leadership leading to a toxic culture. Sometimes values are performative or even vary by department. I think Glassdoor can be a good indicator.... sure, there will always be a few unhappy people at an organization but... when you start reading themes... a red flag might go off.
