Looking for a job can be an emotional roller coaster, and it's easy to feel demotivated, overwhelmed, or anxious during the process. But the good news is, you're not alone. Everyone experiences these feelings at some point during their job search journey.
At our recent coaching session, we discussed various tips and strategies for managing these emotions. Here are some of the ways our participants manage their emotions:
Turtling: When feeling overwhelmed, one of our participants mentioned they like to retreat and process everything in their head before creating a plan and feeling better. This approach is commonly known as "turtling."
Taking Breaks: Another popular strategy for multiple folks was managing job search stress is taking regular breaks. This could involve taking a walk, playing a game, watching a video, or doing any activity that helps you relax.
Investing: One of our participants enjoys investing and analyzing the financial market to stay motivated and feel productive. This can also help keep their minds off the job search for a while.
Cooking: Cooking can be a great way to unwind and de-stress. Many of our participants enjoy cooking as a way to clear their minds and create something delicious.
Finding Routines: Establishing a routine can help create structure and reduce anxiety. This could include setting specific times for job searching, exercise, and breaks.
Being Positive: Finally, having a positive mindset is essential for overcoming job search stress. Try to focus on the progress you're making, rather than dwelling on rejections or setbacks.
This list could be much longer but these were the tactics our participants use. As you can see they are very varied. You just need to find your own that works for you!!
In addition to these strategies, we also discussed the importance of sharing your experiences and learning from others. It's easy to feel alone during the job search process, but connecting with others who are going through the same thing can be incredibly helpful.
During our coaching session, one of the participants shared how she felt incredibly alone during her job search. She had been searching for a job for several months and felt like she was the only one going through the experience. However, after connecting with other job seekers through online communities and networking events, she realized that many people were going through the same thing. By sharing her experiences and learning from others, she was able to gain valuable insights and feel more supported throughout the job search process.
Another participant shared how she found a job through a connection she made at a networking event. She had been feeling overwhelmed and demotivated, but after speaking with someone who had gone through a similar experience, she felt more confident and empowered to continue her job search. By reaching out and connecting with others, she was able to expand her network and find opportunities that she may not have found on her own.
It's important to remember that job searching can be a difficult and isolating experience, but it doesn't have to be. By connecting with others and sharing your experiences, you can gain valuable insights and support to help you through the process. You can join online communities, attend networking events, or even reach out to old colleagues and friends to expand your network. Remember, you never know where your next opportunity may come from, and by staying connected and open to new experiences, you can increase your chances of finding the right job for you.
Remember, mindset is crucial, and the words we use can affect our thoughts and emotions. Be mindful of how you speak about yourself and your experiences, and try to reframe negative thoughts into positive affirmations.
To all the women out there in the job force who may be feeling lonely and stressed out looking for a job, know that you are not alone. It's okay to feel overwhelmed, but it's important to take care of your mental and emotional health during this process. Keep these tips in mind and don't hesitate to reach out for support when you need it.
