I joined as an early employee to a small startup and have put a lot of time and energy to help build the company. We've been struggling financially as a company and I came close to quitting a few times, but I also feel like we may be close to turning the corner with a recent pivot. That being said, I feel I have invested a lot emotionally in the company so am not sure I am evaluating my situation objectively. How do you distance yourself emotionally when evaluating?
And if there's anyone who has been through a failed or has a "near-death" startup experience, I would love to chat!
@lindac What a great question! It's hard to figure out when to stay and when to leave. I've never been through a situation like this myself. However, one thing to do (which is hard in the thick of things) is to:
Understand the different paths you could take and
Then look at the pros and cons of each.
Additionally, as you did above talk to people who have been through similar journeys but if nothing else find others in your trusted network to talk through the pros and cons with them as an objective observer who can provide additional perspectives.
At the end of the day, the decision will be yours but if you can make the decision methodically versus emotionally it might help the process.
